Its name comes from one of the six gates leading to the ancient city of Altino. As early as the year 1000, the island had 8000 inhabitants… fishermen, sailors and small farmers. Visitors arriving on the island of Burano can admire the historic palazzi, surrounded by the famous coloured houses. The island is famous throughout the world for its artistic hand-made lace, dating back to before the 16th century when young girls spent the day working at the lace bobbins, creating authentic masterpieces which can be admired in the island’s Museum of Lace Art. A visit is recommended to watch the work of the shipwrights in the boat yards where the gondolas are built and to taste the typical Venetian dishes.
