In Venice, the PALIO DELLE ANTICHE REPUBBLICHE MARINARE is a sporting event re-evoking the ancient glories of the four historic Maritime Republics of Italy - Venice, Amalfi, Pisa and Genoa.

Held in rotation in each of the four Republics, each year on a day between the end of May and beginning of July, four eight-oar galleys, each representing one of the four Republics, compete in a race to win a prize known as the Palio.

The regatta is preceded by a picturesque procession of hundreds of historic craft carrying people in period costume, commemorating historic events in the city hosting the Palio.  Each regatta is presided over by the President of the Republic.
